Stop Smoking Help – Get The Facts About Stop Smoking Aids

Many people and companies claim to have the latest method to help smokers quit. It usually comes with a testimonial like, “I’ve tried everything else, but this miracle elixir finally made me stop smoking”. Really? I often wonder that if products like this are so great, then there must be tons of scientific literature to support their claims. Surely, the news agencies must be covering their amazing story. Sadly, the old adage that says if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably isn’t, seems to hit the mark. Many of these astounding new products are no different than the snake oil, peddled by traveling salesmen in the old west.

Quit rates continue to range between 3% (quitting cold turkey) and 21% (using prescription medication as part of a smoking cessation program). This is the big reason so many remedies have flooded the market and again, some with compelling testimonials. These makers know that people have trouble stop smoking, even with traditional front line stop smoking aids. By 2007, roughly 20% of all Americans currently smoke. That’s a 5% drop in the number of smokers over a ten year period. Unfortunately, one-third of these former smokers will relapse within four years of having quit. Most smokers have considered quitting at some point or another. This desire to quit is the opportunity that many want to capitalize upon.

Although their methods may not be published in the medical journals, these non-traditional start-ups do have one very powerful piece of medical science in their corner. It’s the same piece of medicine that actually could bring about the desired outcome of smoking cessation for those desperate enough to try it. This scientific phenomena is known as the “Placebo Effect”.

If a smoker attempting to quit has a strong enough desire to stop smoking, then just about any stop smoking aid will be successful. You could tell them that eating pancakes for 20 consecutive days would stop their smoking habit and, as if by magic, it would probably work. The power of suggestion behind the cure, is actually greater than the cure itself, that’s the placebo effect. It is well documented and has been a mainstay in medicine for years and years.

Every smoker is different from physiology and genetics to the social and environmental cues that trigger the lighting up of a cigarette. Smoking and the nicotine addiction is like a fingerprint, no two smokers are the same. Although experiences may be similar, outcomes will vary, even among close relatives. This is what makes the scientific approach to smoking cessation so valuable, especially in this particular process.

So the question becomes, how can the everyday person find the clinical information they need to help them become a successful ex-smoker? Luckily, there are many organizations, websites, and clinics willing to help. Even physicians, all over the country, are targeted by these groups to become key figures on the frontlines of smoking cessation. They can be a great place for smokers to start their journey toward nicotine freedom. They can provide you with all the credible options and link them back to your personal health situation. Studies show that physician involvement can double your chances of success.

So don’t fall for the snake oil that claims to help everyone quit smoking with 100% success. Remember many of these rely on the placebo effect to get their desired outcome and incredible testimonials. I would suggest that smokers look to more credible resources to provide them the information they need. Then a smoking cessation program can be designed and tailored around what fits them best. I would still suggest that even those who are very serious about stopping their smoking habit, are bound and determined to stop no matter what, still look at all the options available. Then discuss them with a qualified health care professional or smoking cessation counselor and then choose a method that provides the greatest chance of success. Who knows, that method might just be quitting cold turkey.
